Environmental Justice

What is Environmental Justice?

Environmental Justice (EJ)  means that everyone, regardless of race, color, national origin, or income, has the right to the same environmental protections and benefits. The environmental justice movement began as a response to the recognition that certain marginalized and vulnerable communities often bear a disproportionate burden of environmental risks and hazards. These communities are also referred to as EJ areas.

It’s important to ensure steps are being taken to include these communities while tackling environmental issues, collecting environmental and public health data, and gathering input and opinions from residents. According to the EPA, some areas of north Normal and west Bloomington fit the criteria for an EJ area. This is why the BN-CARE project includes stationary air quality monitors in these neighborhoods. We also seek input from residents living in these areas in order to develop beneficial and inclusive strategies that will help safeguard from environmental impacts.
